Large Numbers of U.S. Homeowners Aren't Taking Basic Home Security Precautions While Away On Vacation

Shut the Front Door: Lock the Windows, Too. A study of home security practices finds opportunities for most U.S. homeowners to implement additional home protections when they hit the road.

"Our research tells us home security systems and devices are widely under-used across the country – something all Americans should consider as they venture out on vacations. Smart home/security systems mitigate the potential for theft, fire, and water intrusion, and are a powerful line of defense for homeowners."

How Can You Better Protect Your Home While You Are On Vacation?

Protect your home when it's unoccupied so that you can enjoy peace of mind and focus on making a memorable vacation. Following are a few steps to keep your home safe:

  1. Install and use a home security system/device.
  2. Lock all of your doors and windows – and double-check!
  3. Use an automatic timer to set your lights.
  4. Stop your mail, package, and news deliveries.
  5. Bring all house keys with you, or leave one with a trusted friend to check up on the home while you're gone!

"While homeowners should focus on creating vacation memories, it is equally important to take precautions to protect their homes and valuables while they're away."
