BRANCHVILLE, N.J., November 16, 2017 -- Michael H. Lanza, executive vice president, general counsel and chief compliance officer of Selective Insurance Company of America, is being inducted into the National Center for State Courts’ (NCSC) Warren E. Burger Society. The induction ceremony took place November 16, in Washington, D.C. The Burger Society honors individuals who have volunteered their time, talent and support to the National Center in exceptional ways. It is named for the former Chief Justice of the United States who helped found the NCSC in 1971.

Lanza is being recognized for his extraordinary support of the National Task Force on Fines, Fees, and Bail Practices, a project of the Conference of Chief Justices, the Conference of State Court Administrators, and NCSC. Lanza and Selective Insurance are sponsoring a Driving Simulator Safety Training Pilot Project, which tests whether the simulators are an effective sanction in traffic-related cases where people are unable to pay their fines and fees. Economically disadvantaged people who cannot afford traffic fines and fees often end up in jail for inability to pay. The use of driving simulators – donated by Selective -- is helping NCSC and the task force to determine if the simulators are a viable alternative to fines/fees. The simulators are being piloted in courts across the country.

Lanza, a member of NCSC’s General Counsel Committee, has also worked in leadership positions at QuadraMed Corporation and at CIGNA Corporation
