Independence is NOT a Desert Island

Selective continues to expand its footprint, bringing commercial and personal lines coverage to new states across the country. Near the end of 2021, my management team asked me to help establish Selective in the great state of Vermont. It was the first large project I was to lead, and I was excited to navigate Vermont’s insurance rules and regulations. However, I had no idea just how complex the task would be or how much I would learn about myself along the way.

Vermont’s insurance regulatory environment is unique, and our initial appetite for business in the state was limited. So, my goals were to train Selective staff about these nuances and help them write more business in Vermont. It seemed straightforward. But how would I educate my staff on topics about which I was unfamiliar? I always thought I was a woman who could figure things out on her own, but I did not have the answers this time. I felt overwhelmed and began to question my qualifications to lead this project.

I thought about a time several years ago when I also felt overwhelmed. Then I thought about what made me feel better; I remembered a conversation with Tom Purnell, Senior Vice President, Regional Manager, about his desire to get some women-owned agencies together for a social and educational event. I also knew several agents who wanted to learn more about leadership but had few resources.

At that time, Tom advised me that other regions were conducting similar events. He encouraged me to take the lead on starting the Northeast Agency Women’s Group and provided some funding, resources, and guidance. Shortly after, Selective started Women’s Agency Leadership Initiative, and my small group joined a much larger one.

I thought to myself, what had I learned then that I could apply here in Vermont? Then I had my aha moment.

I realized that none of my successes throughout my career were solo endeavors. I always had the support of others when I asked for it. Being strong and independent doesn’t mean I am in this alone! Independence is not a desert island.

It is more about seeking help and guidance when necessary. It is about stepping out of my comfort zone and realizing that I don’t have all the answers, but I have something better: the support of my leaders. With their support and the help of our Line of Business experts and Business Service Unit, we launched in Vermont – soon after meeting our new business goal, and completed staff training.

This project not only allowed me to grow my knowledge of a new state but also reminded me of how to overcome obstacles. It helped me bring Selective to a new place, and it taught me a lot about myself. I am grateful for the support I have here at Selective.
