Fostering Confidence and Connection: The Power of Networking for Women in the Insurance Industry

By Tracey Vasile

In the world of insurance, networking is more than a buzzword; it’s a lifeline to success. For industry professionals who want to grow their networks, juggling their roles within their organization and connecting with peers and mentors outside of work can seem like an enormous task. However, networking offers unique and specific opportunities to build camaraderie, confidence, and professional connections.

Finding the value of networking

Some people may think building a network is a lot of work, not much fun, and doesn’t provide much value for the effort. I could not disagree more! Aside from personal and professional growth, some key advantages of networking are:

  • Industry Insights: Being part of a network lets you stay up-to-date on industry trends, news, and developments.
  • Increased Confidence: Networking can boost your confidence in various situations, from public speaking to problem-solving and seeking roles of greater responsibility.
  • Broader Exposure: Networking lets you connect and learn from professionals outside of your immediate organization but within the industry.
  • Knowledge Sharing: You can tap into the expertise, knowledge, and advice of others.

Go to that event you were going to skip. Join that professional organization. Ask your colleague to introduce you to the senior executive you’ve wanted to meet. Get involved with a local nonprofit or offer to mentor the new person on the team. Before you know it, your networks will have grown in size and diversity.

Women supporting women

Networking offers insurance professionals a way to build community with like-minded people and create systems of support, which I believe are incredibly important for women in insurance. Having been a part of this industry for more than 20 years, I am passionate about and committed to mentoring women in our industry. When I was asked to join the Association of Professional Insurance Women (APIW) Board of Directors as the Industry Relations Officer, I couldn’t say no. APIW is one of many networks I have participated in throughout my career, and I take great pride in membership.

There are many opportunities for women to connect with other women in insurance. Nationally, regionally, and locally, women are increasingly making waves in the industry, and companies and organizations like APIW are dedicated to their development.

Diversity in networking

Think about the people who make up your networks today. Do they all have similar backgrounds and life experiences? Do they tend to look the same? One of the greatest attributes of any network is diversity. Diversity in your networking groups can expose you to different perspectives, leading to higher learning and growth. I have consistently grown the most from including and engaging with the people in my networks who are different from me, regardless of gender, race, age, or professional experience. If your networks are not composed of diverse individuals, figure out how to bring in and connect with a broader range of people.

Insurance is an ever-changing industry where strong networks and a culture of confidence are essential to women’s professional growth. The power of networking can provide them with much-needed support, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration.
